Workshop for Zhen’s and Lis’ PhD defence

The two PhD candidates in the BaSIS project have finished their PhD theses! The public defence ceremonies are scheduled as follows:

  • Weds 4th September 2024, 16h00: Elisabeth J. Kerr – Tunen syntax and information structure (see here)
  • Thurs 5th September 2024, 11h30: Zhen Li – Word order, information structure and agreement in Teke-Kukuya (see here)

In honour of their achievements, we will hold an informal workshop on Wednesday 4th September on syntax, information structure, and Bantu languages, with a preliminary schedule as follows:

10-10.30              Jan-Wouter Zwart (University of Groningen) – On externalisation (PF after LF).

10.30-11              Anikó Lipták (LUCL) – On some reasons to rob banks.

11-11.30              Sjef Barbiers (LUCL) – How to get on X: Three types of SOVX languages.

12-12.30              Koen Bostoen (Ghent University) – The genealogy and contact history of Kukuya (Bantu, B77a) and its closest Teke relatives: new insights from diachronic phonology.

12.30-13              Lutz Marten (SOAS University of London)

The workshop will take place in Lipsius 2.01.
